    Hydrogen Society
Aiming to Realize a Hydrogen Society
In its endeavor to realize the joy and freedom of movement and an enriched sustainable society, Honda has on the one hand been developing fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), and on the other, has pursued its own research and development of hydrogen stations that efficiently generate hydrogen from renewable energy, as a low-carbon technology to “generate” hydrogen for “use” by FCVs.

As one of its achievements, Honda has realized the readily-installable, completely-packaged Smart Hydrogen Station (SHS) which enables local energy generation and provision. Honda has also developed portable external power output devices and rechargers that enable electricity generated by FCVs to be used by households and public facilities, and can “get connected” to society in disaster situations.

By bringing a hydrogen society that can “generate,” “use,” and “get connected” closer, Honda strives to contribute even more to people’s lives and society.

Honda also is committed to furthering hydrogen technologies to make FCVs more useful than conventional vehicles, and to use these technologies to create new connections between people, society, and vehicles.

Hydrogen’s Potential to Realize a Sustainable Energy Society
Circulative Energy that Does Not Rely on Fossil Fuel

Hydrogen is not naturally occurring, but can be found in various other substances, and can be extracted. Hydrogen can be generated from natural gas and biomass, and electrolysis using renewable energies such as solar, wind or hydro-power generation.

As hydrogen can be generated using methods suited to regional characteristics and climate, an ideal hydrogen cycle that does not rely on fossil fuel can be established in the future.

Hydrogen Can Be Made, Transported and Stored, and Used to Generate Electricity When Required

Electricity can be stored in batteries, but large capacities cause problems. Electricity is normally generated at power plants, and is constantly supplied based on usage forecasts.

Hydrogen once generated can be compressed and liquefied for storage and transportation in fuel tanks, so fuel cells need only generate the necessary amount of electricity when and where it is needed.

Energy can be efficiently utilized, without waste.

Honda is Developing Hydrogen Technologies to “Generate,” “Use,” and “Get Connected”

Hydrogen can be “generated” using renewable energy, and can be transported and stored.

Honda has focused on these characteristics of hydrogen, and has developed unique hydrogen technologies aimed at realizing a hydrogen society. The easily-installable, compact Smart Hydrogen Station (SHS) can “generate” hydrogen using renewable sources such as solar power.

FCVs “use” hydrogen to generate electricity and drive.

And, FCVs can be used as “small power plants” or “power plants on wheels” and “get connected” to portable external power sources, households and public facilities to supply electricity.

Honda is expanding the possibilities of hydrogen energy, such as the use as emergency power during disasters.
